A Commitment for the New Year
The New Year is an opportunity to commit to new ways of engagement with Jewish values. Our Torah commands us
צדק צדק תרדף (tzedek tzedek tirdof, or Justice, Justice, shall you pursue). Rabbi Goldstein and your synagogue’s leadership, through the Social Action Committee, encourage you to pick one or more areas of interest that appeal to you.
_____Economic Justice – alleviating hunger; addressing homelessness; advocating for Living Wage policies; working for access to health care, Medicaid expansion; taxation inequality; reducing crippling student debt
_____Environmental Justice – working for clean water, clean air, clean streets, clean and reduced energy consumption; planting Grass to Greens spaces; supporting sustainable forests and land management; fighting diminishing biodiversity; reducing the impact of population growth
_____Education – improving the first 2000 days of a child's life, helping with literacy programs,working to ensure adequate public school funding, advocating for treating teachers as professionals
_____Religious Freedom – maintaining separation of church and state in schools, government meetings and publicly owned spaces; educating others about life as a religious minority in a predominantly Christian community; building rapport with other faith communities
_____Racial Justice – establishing dialogue; educating about Asheville's racial history; building coalitions to combat racism; ensuring fair treatment of minorities by law enforcement
_____Gender Justice – advocating for reproductive freedom rights; supporting the LGBTQ community; ensuring equal treatment in the workplace, including pay and health benefits.
_____Immigrant Justice – combating workplace discrimination and exploitation of immigrants; opposing profiling by law enforcement
_____Electoral Justice – working for nonpartisan redistricting; advocating for expanding voting opportunities; voter registration and get-out-the vote activities; working to minimize the influence of money in politics
