Kosher in Asheville

Yes, you can keep kosher in Asheville! Many of our congregants do so, and it gets easier every year. This page offers some resources. We welcome your suggestions for making this page more complete. If you have comments or additions, please feel free to contact the .

Beth Israel Synagogue does not endorse or oversee any of the businesses listed on this page. This page is for informational purposes only, and it is the responsibility of each individual to ensure that a particular establishment or product meets his or her standards of kashrut.

All our local supermarkets carry a large variety of products produced under kosher supervision. This often includes store brands; check the labels and you may be surprised! Here's a small selection of kosher products available in the Asheville area:

  • The Ingles market on Merrimon Ave. at Beaverdam carries a variety of Empire Kosher products, including frozen kosher poultry and many prepared items. They also have kosher hot dogs and Kineret frozen challah dough.
  • Several Ingles markets have small kosher food sections with many Manishewitz and other kosher products. They expand their offerings for Pesah. Ingles also carries a small selection of Cabot kosher cheese.
  • Food Lion in River Ridge carries Best's products (meat).
  • Sam's Club sometimes carries kosher hot dogs and kosher cheese under the Cabot label. Also, the Wal-Marts in Hendersonville and east Asheville have kosher food sections, with items such as Osem kosher bullion, Kedem grape juice, and even kosher honey and chewing gum.
  • Greenlife Grocery on lower Merrimon Ave. now carries frozen organic kosher chicken and frozen kosher bison burgers.
  • Asheville has three natural foods supermarkets, all of which carry many kosher and vegetarian items: Greenlife Grocery on Merrimon, Earth Fare at the Westgate Shopping Center, and the French Broad Food Coop on Biltmore Ave.
  • If you're looking for something other than Manischewitz, kosher wines are available at Greenlife Grocery, The Wine Guy, and Asheville Wine Market. Other local wine wine shops also carry kosher wines, so ask at your favorite store.
  • Last but certainly not least, Greenlife Grocery carries an excellent collection of high-quality kosher chocolate.

While there are no supervised kosher restaurants in Asheville, most restaraunts offer at least some vegetarian options. There are several all-vegetarian restaurants, including:

  • The Laughing Seed on Wall St.
  • Rosetta's Kitchen on Lexington Ave.

The synagogue office maintains a list of local kosher caterers. Please call if you are interested, or to inquire about periodic kosher meat deliveries.
